Toronto Blue Jays 2022 Outlook

A couple of key members of the Blue Jays lineup missed significant time in 2021 and the team still managed to score the third-most runs in Major League Baseball. After a little bit of offseason shuffling, Toronto looks to continue as a juggernaut in the batter's box. Increased stability on the mound could result in the Blue Jays pushing past the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees into the second spot in the AL East in 2022 – a feat they fell just short of last year. Toronto is one of the first teams that comes to mind when discussing the benefits of the additional playoff spot in both leagues, as their division looks to remain ultra-competitive.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. spent his first two seasons looking like a solid hitter who might not reach the high expectations placed upon him as a prospect. Then, 2021 happened. A unicorn season from Shohei Ohtani kept Guerrero from winning the MVP award in a season in which he threatened to win the Triple Crown late into the summer. Nothing about what he did feels like a fluke, as he had an OPS of well-above .900 in five of the season's sixth months. Guerrero stands out in a lineup that features almost all right-handed sluggers. Toronto lost Marcus Semien and Randall Grichuk to free agency but added Matt Chapman. The Blue Jays are hoping to see full seasons from George Springer and Cavan Biggio, who both missed roughly half of 2021. As a left-handed hitter, Biggio is an unpredictable key component of the lineup.

Kevin Gausman greatly improves a starting rotation that was a bit disappointing last year. He was a big surprise last year with a 2.81 ERA in 33 starts for the Giants, marking the best season of his nine-year career. Hyun Jin Ryu was just average after three stellar seasons. Jose Berrios threw in just 12 games for the Blue Jays. The combination of the three promises a better year for Toronto, as long as Gausman can maintain last year's form and Ryu (35) can win the battle with Father Time. The Blue Jay bullpen is an area of concern, with no real standouts and a group of middle-of-the-pack arms that has been apparently pieced together to optimistically be just good enough.

The park factors statistic rates the Rogers Centre as the eighth-best stadium for hitters. Combine that with the potent Blue Jay lineup and fans are in for some exciting games in 2022. For Blue Jays fans and opposing fans alike, the Rogers Centre makes for an enjoyable viewing experience. Visiting fans get their only opportunity for an MLB venue outside of the United States in  vibrant, tourist-friendly Toronto. The CN Tower is visible outside of the stadium when the roof is open and provides for some dizzying, picturesque views.

The seats behind home plate are some of the best at the Rogers Centre. A massive video board in centerfield and the backdrop of the collapsed open roof, combined with VIP suites make these seats a great place to take in a game. The 200 level seats behind the plate also provide shade from the sun on summer days when the roof is open.

Toronto Blue Jays History

Toronto won back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. After a postseason dry spell, the Blue Jays have put together a run of good teams over the last seven seasons. They won the AL East in 2015 and claimed wild card berths in 2016 and 2020. Last season they missed the wild card by ending up just one game behind both New York and Boston. A thorn in Toronto's side has and probably will always be the strength of the AL East. Keeping up with the defending AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox is no small task, but the Blue Jays have shown that they are, at least as of now, committed and capable of doing just that.

It may surprise some to know that since becoming a Major League team, the Blue Jays are one of the most popular teams in terms of both attendance and All-Star votes. In 1991, they became the first team to host more than 4 million fans in a single season. Among the most popular players to ever don the Blue Jay blue are Roy Halladay, Dave Stieb, and Jose Bautista.

A couple of unique traditions set Toronto games apart. For starters, Blue Jays fans sing "O Canada," the Canadian national anthem, in addition to the "Star-Spangled Banner." Another special song, "OK Blue Jays" is played with the seventh-inning stretch.

With young stars in Guerrero and Bo Bichette, some of the best-looking uniforms in baseball, a recent run of success, and a passionate fan base, Toronto will be one of the best places to catch a ball game in 2022.
