Few teams can virtually take the playoffs for granted. That's where the Yankees typically are, with postseason appearances in five straight seasons. For New York, frequent World Series titles is the expectation. It's now been 13 years since baseball's most prolific franchise has lifted the trophy, but the Yankees have seemingly assembled one of the game's best rosters once again. Fans anticipate the team to not only clinch the playoffs, but to make a deep run.
New York's lineup is stacked with hitters who have put in great seasons for other teams, such as Josh Donaldson, Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and Joey Gallo. Of those, Stanton and LeMahieu have already logged strong campaigns in pinstripes. After a pair of injury-riddled seasons, the former slugged 35 home runs last season with a .354 on-base percentage. LeMahieu was one of the best hitters in the American League in 2019 and 2020 but battled through injury and struggled last year. The others have yet to prove themselves as Yankees, but all possess the talent to put up All-Star numbers. Aaron Judge is one of the game's best sluggers, and Gleyber Torres is looking to revive his career in a critical year. The lineup has a nice mix of guys from both sides of the plate and looks to improve upon finishing 13th in runs scored in 2021.
Gerrit Cole is a reliable ace for New York. The key to the staff and biggest question mark is Luis Severino, who has thrown just seven games in the last three seasons. He won 33 games over the 2017 and 2018 seasons and was the second runner-up for AL Cy Young in the first of those two years. His health will impact the Yankees' capacity to compete in baseball's toughest division and to make a playoff run. The 1-2 punch of Cole and Severino could be as intimidating as any in the game.
Besides being the game's most iconic team in America's most famous city, the Yankees are loaded with talent and play frequent host to some of the game's biggest starts due to their membership in the AL East. The new Yankee Stadium is 13 years old now and is chock-full of modern amenities. The design leaves all concourses open to the playing field, so fans can see the action as they arrive, walk around, and get up to get concessions or use the bathroom.
It's not cheap to visit Yankee Stadium, and many sections are notoriously expensive. Fans with money to burn can have an incredible experience and sit among the who's who of the Big Apple. That doesn't mean there aren't good moderately priced tickets to Yankees games. The Field Box class of outfield seats are cushioned and provide great views at a fraction of the price of Field Box MVP infield seats. A fun and unique area is the three rows in Section 104, which are the "Judge's Chambers." In these seats, fans dress up as judges, swing gavels, and chant for their hero, Aaron Judge.
New York has won 27 World Series titles, which is 16 more than the second-most successful team (Cardinals). The Yankees have featured the game's biggest superstars, including names like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, and Jeter. They won six championships between 1936 and 1943, anchored by Gehrig and DiMaggio for most of those years. They are known for spending big money and producing big results. However, things have gotten more challenging in recent decades, as the leagues have expanded and other big buyers have kept pace with player salaries. Their 2009 World Series win is the only one in the last 21 seasons.
The team is based in the Bronx and has existed as the New York Yankees since 1913. Having played nearly 20,000 games in franchise history, they own the best winning percentage of all MLB teams at right around .570. One of the biggest rivalries in world sports is that of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The two teams have competed for players and titles, with New York being the much more regularly successful of the two. Games between the Yankees and Red Sox are electric, and often described as having a playoff atmosphere regardless of when they are played. A Red Sox executive coined the term "Evil Empire" for the Yankees, which has been applied liberally ever since. New York also has modern rivals in the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros.
A 2013 study revealed the New York Yankees as the fourth-most valuable sports franchise in the world, with three European soccer teams ranking above them. A few years ago, Forbes estimated that the Yankees are worth nearly $5 billion. In annual surveys of the most hated teams in baseball, New York regular takes the cake by a wide margin.
