Chicago White Sox 2022 Outlook

As sudden as was rise to power for the White Sox, even more surprising was their quiet exit from the playoffs in 2021. Chicago still has one of the strongest rosters in the American League in 2021. Tony LaRussa's squad will be playing with plenty to prove and an even bigger chip on its shoulder.

The lineup for the White Sox is one that can kill opposing pitching in a variety of ways. They've got speed and power. Guys who jump on early pitches and guys who can work the count. They are particularly strong from the right side of the batter's box, with Tim Anderson, Luis Robert, Jose Abreu, and Eloy Jimenez all on that side. They also have three switch hitters – Yasmani Grandal, Yoan Moncada, and Leury Garcia, who will all have significant at-bats this season. Robert is a hitter to pay attention to. He's a physical specimen and caught the eyes of many as a prospect. His poor shortened season and an injury last year turned him into an afterthought. However, when he returned, he led the Major Leagues in batting average for players with a minimum of 250 at-bats with a mark of .338. What he can do over a full season is very intriguing.

Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, and Michael Kopech form a trio of young, flamethrowing starters at the top of the Chicago rotation. Giolito has turned in three consecutive solid years, but many believe he has the stuff to become one of the best starters in the league. Last season he boasted a 2.65 ERA in 13 second-half starts. Liam Hendricks might be the best closer in baseball. In 2021, he saved 38 games and struck out a whopping 113 batters in 71 innings. Once again, the White Sox will be one of the most difficult teams to mount a late-game comeback against.

Chicago White Sox Tickets

Guaranteed Rate Field will see plenty of fireworks this season in terms of exciting offensive play. Perhaps no lineup is as exciting as Chicago's. And in terms of Chicago baseball venues, the home of the White Sox will feature cheaper tickets and a better on-field product this season. The venue is 31 years old but has seen big renovations over the last decade to keep old amenities up to date and add new ones for a better fan experience.

One of the newer changes to the stadium is the creation of "Goose Island," which used to be sections 106 and 107 in right field. The area has been changed to feature water elements and provide new, fun experiences for fans, whether they want to sit, stand, host a party, or lounge in luxury. The first two rows have incredibly comfortable seating with television screens and device charging ports. Seats along the first base line are more likely to be in the shade, especially higher up on the first deck.

Chicago White Sox History

Even though the World Series curse of the Boston Red Sox is more famous, the White Sox experienced an even longer championship hiatus from 1917 to 2005. The notorious "Black Sox" were heavily favored to win the 1919 World Series, but lost in controversy as reports of "throwing" the series marred the season finale and saw eight White Sox players banned from the game for life. For superstitious baseball fans, the long title drought was a punishment for doing the unithinkable.

The 2005 team swept the Houston Astros to claim the world title. They won by two runs or less in all four games, primarily using pitching and defense to get the job done. On the offensive side, Jermaine Dye collected seven hits over the four games, including a double and a home run, to claim series MVP.

There are songs about the tough realities of the South of Chicago, and the White Sox frequently epitomize the reputation of their place in the Windy City. White Sox teams and players are often tough, underdog types. Their identity contrasts with that of the "loveable losers" on the North Side. The Chicago Cubs have often provided the more agreeable option for Chicago baseball fans, and tourists to the City have Wrigley Field as a bucket list item. That said, White Sox fans are passionate and increasing in number with the team's current direction.

Rivals for the White Sox include the crosstown Cubs as well as divisional rivals such as the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians. The team's traditions include wearing throwback uniforms (fans claim the White Sox were doing this before other franchises), singing, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," when the opposing pitcher is lifted, and hosting an annual "Elvis Night." After the White Sox hit a home run, the PA system blasts Pitbull's "Don't Stop the Party" over the loudspeakers. AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" has been a favorite song to play when introducing the team at the beginning of games.
