Team Name: The Chicago Cubs Year Founded: 1870 Division: National League Central Stadium Name: Wrigley Field, Sloan Park, Chicago, Illinois Number of World Series championships won: Three (3)
They are known as “The North Siders” in contrast with their neighboring team, the Chicago White Sox. The team has been part of Major League Baseball since 1876 and the first baseball team in the city of Chicago. They resided at Wrigley Field for a whopping 104 years, where a manual scoreboard is still used. The Cubs are one of the oldest teams in MLB and the the first baseball team in the city of Chicago. They have acquired a lot of notoriety thanks to their seniority and their talent.
The franchise history dates back to 1876, but it wouldn’t be for another 25 years that they would become known as the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Daily News was the first to pen the name Cubs, but in the prior years the team was known as the White Stockings, Colts and Orphans.
At the turn of the century, the Cubs were among the league’s elite teams. In 1907 they claimed their first World Series title, defeating the Detroit Tigers in six games, only to repeat that feat again in 1908, once again knocking out the Tigers.
Over the remainder of the 1900’s, the Cubs became known as the tough luck team. Whether it was blamed on management, players or the “Curse of the Billy Goat”. The team remained without a title since 1908. But in that same period, the Cubs and the city of Chicago have begun a love affair unmatched by almost any other city. Nearly every game, Chicagoans fill the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, the second oldest stadium only behind Boston’s Fenway Park. During the seventh inning stretch of every home game, fans join together to root for the Cubbies, singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, a tradition started by legendary announcer Harry Caray, who is now immortalized by a statue that was erected outside of the stadium in his honor.
The Cubs then went up against the Cleveland Indians in the World Series where they won in 7 games. Finally, the Cubs won their first World Series in 98 years!
They have won the American League Baseball Championship (called The American League Championship Series or AL pennants) 17 times, the Central Division 5 times and the East Division 2 times.
This year will be the 151st season of the Chicago Cubs franchise and 147th season in the National League. They are in an interesting position going into the 2022 MLB season. David Ross will be managing the Cubs for the third consecutive year. The Cubs took a valuable first step at the beginning of December and signed Marcus Stroman, the pitcher to a three-year, $71 million deal. He will be an asset and a great addition to the team and could help leading them to the victory. The team also consisted of some of the top prospects like Brennen Davis the Outfielder, relief pitcher Miguel Amaya, Pitcher Braylin Marquez, Shortstop Cristian Hernandez and Outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Cubs have a very solid team for the 2022 season!
