When you think of the Atlanta Braves, you think about consistency, you think about pitching and you think about winning. Fans who have lined up year in and year out to buy Braves tickets saw their team win fourteen consecutive division titles from 1991 to 2005, go to the World Series five times and win the title in 1995 against the Cleveland Indians. The franchise has seen three different cities (Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta), one home run king and many, many memorable moments that all encompass their rich history.
Of all the great players that have ever donned the Atlanta Braves uniform, none were as important and influential as Henry "Hank" Aaron. "Hammerin'" Hank made his debut in 1954 as part of the Milwaukee Braves after playing for a couple of years in the Negro Leagues. He quickly made an impact for the Braves, getting elected to the All-Star Game in only his second year, hitting .314 and belting 27 home runs. Even with that great season and his prime ahead of him, few could have predicted what was in store for Hank. Over his 22-year career with the Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers he became the model of consistency with a career batting average of .305. Though never hitting more than 47 home runs in a single year, Hank Aaron became baseball's home run king. During the off-season before the Atlanta Braves' 1974 season, Aaron received death threats and hate mail from fans who did not want an African-American to break the home run record. Through strength and determination, Aaron persevered and broke the record on April 8, 1974, against the Los Angeles Dodgers in front of thousands of supportive fans with Braves tickets. He finished his career with 755 home runs and represented the Atlanta Braves in the All-Star Game for 21 consecutive years.
From when Hank Aaron left the Atlanta Braves in 1974 up until 1990, the team failed to win their division in all but one year (1982). In 1991, they re-hired Bobby Cox as manager, after he had served in the same position from 1978 to 1981, and began to develop their young talent. They reached the World Series after a worst-to-first transformation, going from 65 wins in 1990 to 94 wins in 1991. Although they lost the fall classic to the Minnesota Twins that year, it marked the first year of sustained excellence for the club. Over the next decade and a half, the Atlanta Braves dominated the National League, going to the World Series in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1999, winning the whole thing against the Cleveland Indians in '95.
The team now relies on the talents of players like Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis, and Julio Teherán to lead their ball club back to prominence. The 2018 season is the 148th season for the franchise and their 53rd season in Atlanta. It is also the team’s second season at SunTrust Park which began construction in 2014. The 41,084-seating ballpark is a great venue to watch the Atlanta Braves compete. This year the Braves have already improved on their 72-90 record from the 2017 season. Their currently in first place in the NL East division. If the Braves play with the same tenacity that they have all season, then the team will be able to advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Their regular season will end on September 30th with a game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Hopefully the Braves season won’t end there!
